Genre Research

INTRODUCTION:
To ensure that my chosen brief is successful, in this post I am going to undertake research into genre. By highlighting and analysing the different types of codes and coventions within the media industry, I will be able to identify which are best suited, when producing my own media product; making sure it's effecting and maintains a clear and distinct focus, that complies with the theme of Current Affairs. The genre of the text as described in my chosen brief is broadcast journalism, and I will be looking at the conventions of 3 media products that of the same genre.

GENRE RESEARCH: How are genre conventions used in 3 media products? Choose 3 media texts similar to the ones you chose in for your NEA to help you identify and analyse relevant conventions of the chosen genre.

For example:
  • If you chose the Magazine brief - Look at 3 different magazines front covers and contents pages of the same genre (current affairs) and identify codes and conventions that makes them effective, e.g. type of photography? Layout? Typography? Language used? Colours (denotation/connotation)? Political affiliations and how these are evident in the front covers and contents pages? You need to use screen grabs.
Explain what makes these conventions effective in "driving the story forward".

Key words and concepts to be used in this analysis:
  • Mise-en-scene: props, settings, hair, make up, performance (body language), lighting (low/high key).
  • Camera work: type of shot, camera movement and angle.
  • Sound: diegetic, non-diegetic, sound effects, etc.
  • Editing: slow motion, fast pace, slow pace, transitions (cuts, dissolves).

CONCLUSION:
From my genre research, I have found that the use of codes and conventions is a very simple but also effective way to project a message across to an audience. It can be identified that diffent institutions, change their typography's size, colour or even font, to create effect. Here, its placement as well as its connotations play a large influence, because if not presented correctly, individuals' focus may diviate in a different direction if it has associations with a subject matter that does not link with your over all idea. Within my research, I found that many had used colour to trigger and emotion or create a specific effect, an example being different tones of oranges and reds because they had connotations of death, danger and urgency which overall made the audience aware of the severity of their chosen subject matter. Additionally, I also identified that some had used symbolic codes that were emotionally connected; they were targeted more socially instead of  having an economical or environmental direction/ focus. I highly enjoyed that these symbolic codes were more conceptual because you could perceive them in many different ways, depending on beliefs and morals; I believe that they were used more frequently and were most effective at projecting their message across. Alongside this, their were projected in ways which are more creative and seen as 'outside of the box'. Some examples that I extremely enjoyed seen in my PowerPoint presentation above, is of media products number two and six. In my second analysis, I found the missing identity of the representative very capitvating as it drew my attenttion in and challenged my thinking process. As well as this, when analysing my sixth media product I loved the use of a puzzle piece/ outline of a state, this is because it is unique and not seen often in Current Affairs magazines. I would be highly interested in including someting as 'abstract' and fundemental as this, because it would definetly help my message connect more emotionally with the reader, making it more significant and understood. This made me engage with the front cover more deeply, as I started to piece together the narrative that the institution had created in order to emotionally connect and understand their message. Lastly, I could identify that when an institution included the use of technical codes, it was of a controvertial subject matter, because they could manipulate what their audience could see, and therefore change their view point in agreement to their comformation and political bias. I found this to be effective however, in some cases not necessarily needed.
